Fall Is Aeration Time

We sell Exmark and Ryan aerators – stand-on and walk behind. Also have Murrco pull-behind aerators. Stand-on aerators come in 30″ and 24″ widths, walk-behinds come in 27″ and 20″ widths and pull-behind is 42″ wide. We will also be getting in a new brand, Stinger, that has eliminated chains and sprockets by going to all hydro drive for the wheels and tines. Aeration season is typically September through October. Highest and best times are the last two weeks in September and first two weeks of October. All of this depends on rain. Too much rain and the turf turns to a muddy mess. Too little rain and the soil is hard and won’t allow the tines to penetrate and pull a plug. The season could go into November if conditions warrant.
Part of aeration is over-seeding and fertilizing. A 50 lb. bag of grass seed will cover approximately 1/2 acre. Two 50 lb bags of fertilizer will cover 1/2 acre as well. We sell certified Triple Blend Tall Fescue (the best available) and starter fertilizer (18-24-12). The theory is that the cooler temperatures are ideal for seed germination, the fertilizer will give it a very good start in forming deep roots so the grass will survive the winter. Then the following spring, soil temps rise, a little shot of more fertilizer and the yard is looking lush and vibrant green.
